BelAgri
BelAgri is an advanced biomethane production plant created through a joint venture between BelEnergia and the SIGMA Group. The facility valorizes agricultural by-products and organic residues.
Located in Candela (Apulia), BelAgri processes about 60,000 tons of organic residues each year, mainly from olive pomace, olive leaves, and livestock effluents. Through an anaerobic digestion process combined with an upgrading system, these materials are transformed into renewable biomethane, ready for grid injection or use as sustainable biofuel.
In 2025, BelAgri invested in an innovative and efficient odor treatment system, certified in Germany and Switzerland.
Infrastructures and Technology
The plant includes:
- An anaerobic digester that breaks down agricultural residues in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas;
- An upgrading system that purifies raw biogas into high-quality biomethane (CH₄);
- A new advanced odor containment system, which minimizes the impact on local communities and ensures full compliance with environmental standards.
With a current production capacity of 500 Sm³/h, BelAgri generates enough energy to cover the annual consumption of about 4,000 households. In 2026, Belenergia plans to increase the capacity to 750 Sm³/h, further strengthening the contribution of renewable gas.

Sustainability and Environmental Impact
By replacing fossil natural gas with biomethane, BelAgri helps avoid CO₂ emissions (Scope 4) linked to conventional gas production, significantly reducing the regional carbon footprint. Furthermore, the plant promotes sustainable waste management, valorizing agricultural and livestock residues and returning nutrients to the soil through digestate, thus fueling a low-emission circular economy.
With the achievement of the CIC contract, BelAgri is now fully integrated into the Italian biomethane certification system, ensuring traceability and recognition of its environmental benefits.
